Victor Dzau

Victor J. Dzau, MD, is President of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and Vice Chair of the National Research Council. A global leader in cardiovascular medicine and health innovation, he is Chancellor Emeritus of Duke University and former CEO of Duke Health. He previously served as Chair of Medicine at both Harvard and Stanford. Dzau’s pioneering work on the renin-angiotensin system led to treatments for hypertension and heart failure, and his research in regenerative medicine advanced new approaches to heart repair. At NAM, in collaboration with National Academy of Sciences and Royal Society, Dzau launched the first International Summit on Human Genome Editing in 2015, which was followed by a 2017 consensus report. A second summit, held in 2018, led to the 2020 report recommending international norms for responsible human genome editing. In this context, Dzau has also led a major national effort focused on responsible and equitable innovation in biomedicine. At the NAM, Dzau conceptualized and co-leads the Action Collaborative on Emerging Science, Technology, and Innovation, bringing together cross-sectoral leaders to promote ethical science and mitigate risks from new technologies. A leader in global health, Dzau serves on the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, co-leads the Regional Vaccine Manufacturing Collaborative, and co-chairs the Science and Technology Expert Panel for the 100 Days Mission. He has received numerous honors, including the Gustav Nylin Medal and AHA’s Research Achievement Award.
