Jennifer Herdt

Jennifer A. Herdt is Gilbert L. Stark Professor of Christian Ethics and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at Yale Divinity School. She previously served as Academic Dean from 2013 to 2021. A leading scholar in virtue ethics, early modern and modern moral philosophy, and political theology, she is the author of several major works, including Assuming Responsibility: Ecstatic Eudaimonism and the Call to Live Well; Forming Humanity: Redeeming the German Bildung Tradition—supported by a research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation; Putting On Virtue: The Legacy of the Splendid Vices, named a Choice Outstanding Academic Title; and Religion and Faction in Hume’s Moral Philosophy. Herdt’s current research explores more-than-human creaturely agency, as part of a $3.9 million Templeton Foundation-funded initiative on science-informed theological anthropology (2020–2023). She sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Christian Ethics, Studies in Christian Ethics, and the Journal of Religion, and served as President of the Society of Christian Ethics in 2020.
