Christiane Woopen

Christiane Woopen is Heinrich Hertz Professor for Life Ethics at the University of Bonn and Founding Director of the Center for Life Ethics. Prior to this, she served as Professor of Ethics and Theory of Medicine at the University of Cologne, where she was also Director of the interfaculty Cologne Center for Ethics, Rights, Economics, and Social Sciences of Health (CERES). Woopen has led numerous national and international research projects and is actively involved in policy advocacy. She has held key leadership roles, including Chair of the German Ethics Council (2012-2016), President of the Global Summit of National Ethics Councils (2014-2016), and a member of the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee (until 2017). She also served as Co-Spokesperson of the German Government Data Ethics Council (2018-2019) and Chair of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) (2017-2021). Woopen was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class.
